The small and compact STIGA Tornado 5108W is a powerful and fast-working lawn tractor, designed to perform side-discharge or mulching cut on lawns up to 6000 m2 and ensuring incredible flexibility of use. Mulching, which requires the optional mulch kit, shreds clippings and distributes them across the turf as fertilizer, is perfect for neat, well maintained formal lawns; side-discharge, whereby clippings are laid-out in neat rows to the tractor’s right, is the right option if the grass has become too long to be successfully mulched. The Tornado 5108W is equipped with a STIGA ST 550 V-Twin engine with 586 cc displacement and impressive power output. The foot-pedal hydrostatic drive on the Tornado 2108 HW gives infinitely variable ground-speed control, which in turn makes it easier - and safer - to mow and tow around trees, ornaments and other garden obstacles. The 1543H-SD is a fantastic side discharge lawn tractor with the ability to mulch with the optional kit. It cuts the grass into fine pieces and then blows them down onto the surface of the lawn. They wilt, rot down and release valuable nutrients back into the soil to aid strong growth. This saves you the money usually spent on lawn fertilisers and time emptying clipping collectors. It is powered by a Stiga ST400 414cc petrol engine able to cut through the toughest of lawns. With no bulky collection basket present, it is also highly manoeuvrable. The 108cm twin bladed cutting deck makes light work of large areas and the hydrostatic transmission, akin to the automatic transmission in cars, is slick. There are seven cutting heights all selected using one lever and a simple flick of a switch engages the blades. If mulching isn’t possible – the grass is way too long after a few weeks holiday or a prolonged spell of wet weather – simply choose the side-discharge arm to blow clippings away from the lawn. The Mountfield 1738H Twin is a 98cm working width model with a hydrostatic transmission. This high specification garden tractor is manufactured in Europe, is built on a heavier chassis than some of its counterparts and is suitable for lawns up to 2 acres. This tractor now features the new powerful and smooth running Stiga ST600 586cc V-Twin engine. Light steering and a tight turning circle make it easy to manoeuvre around trees, borders and garden furniture with the minimum of effort. All Mountfield garden tractors cut wider than the wheel width, which means there is little trimming left to do after the lawns have been mown.

A hydrostatic transmission is similar in many ways to the gearbox on an automatic car, forward and reverse speeds are infinitely variable. To move forward, you simply press the front section of the pedal; the more firmly you press, the faster you will go. For reverse, press the rear section of the pedal. You can change from forward to reverse instantly, so manoeuvrability is fantastic. It is worth noting that once a customer owns a hydrostatic Mountfield tractor they don’t want to go back to a manual version. Grass cuttings are blown cleanly from the twin bladed cutter deck into a large capacity rear mounted collector. An alarm sounds to let you know when the collector is full, a valuable feature as there is nothing worse than overfilling the collector and then having to unblock the discharge chute by hand – at least you know when the collector is full on a Mountfield! Emptying the collector is done from the driving seat; just extend the lever on the collector and pull, the collector opens wide emptying out the clippings, no need to leave your seat. The seat is also adjustable for added comfort and ease of use. Engaging the cutter deck couldn’t be easier; pull out the control switch for “On” and push it in for “Off”. The deck has seven pre-set cutting heights ranging from 30mm to 90mm selected by using the lever located conveniently beside the seat.

A deck wash facility means keeping the deck clean couldn’t be simpler; just attach a hose to the snap-on connector, turn on the water and engage the blades. Water blasts around beneath the deck washing it clean - job done!

Mountfield lawn tractors are extremely versatile machines, they can collect the grass clippings or if required rear discharge them. They can also mulch and recycle your grass!!

Mulching grass is a great feature as it saves so much time. It can be more than 30% quicker as there is no stopping work to drive to the tip to empty clippings, this also results in a significant fuel saving. Mulching the grass allows clippings to be recycled, improving the soil as they decompose forming a natural fertiliser high in potash and nitrogen. You will notice a marked improvement in your grass as this fertiliser takes effect over the course of the cutting season. You may well ask “Will I see the mulched grass?” The answer is “No!” Mulched clippings are blown down into the turf and are not noticeable provided the grass is cut regularly and not on the lowest setting. Some owners prefer to collect grass cuttings on areas close to the house to be certain that children or pets don’t carry them inside, they then use the mulching facility on all the other areas.

Switching between collection or mulch modes is extremely simple and takes less than a minute. To switch into mulch mode just remove the collector, insert the *mulching plug into the discharge chute and replace the collector. To return to collection simply reverse the procedure.
